Recently, Google‘s Chrome for Android has started testing a new feature: a bottom address bar. This change is now available in the latest version of Chrome Canary, a special version meant for early users. The new design simply moves the address bar from the top of the screen to the bottom, making it easier to reach.

This isn’t the first time Chrome has tried a bottom address bar. Back in 2016, they experimented with a similar design, but it became more complicated over time.

For now, the three-dot menu at the top remains the same, and the tab switcher hasn’t changed either. Since this is still an early version, we might see more updates in the future.

Bottom Address Bar in Chrome for Android

Currently, if you want to try this feature, you need to install Chrome Canary from the Play Store. Keep in mind that this version is experimental and can be buggy, so it’s not the best choice for daily browsing.

To enable the bottom address bar, you have to type this link into the browser: chrome://flags/#android-bottom-toolbar. After that, restart Chrome, go to Settings > Address bar, and select “Bottom.”

Last year, Chrome for iOS added a bottom address bar, so it’s likely that Android will follow suit this time. However, it’s important that Google doesn’t complicate the whole browser.

What users really want is to keep the current bar design but just move it to the bottom. This would make it easier to use the browser with one hand, without changing the overall simplicity of Chrome.
