Google is testing a new user interface (UI) for the Phone app on its Pixel devices, making it more similar to the iPhone’s design. This change is part of an ongoing trend where the Pixel series has been increasingly resembling Apple’s iPhone in both appearance and functionality. With the latest update (version 145.0.672690850), Google is experimenting with a new layout that replaces the swipe actions with two dedicated buttons.
Currently, when you receive a call on a Pixel phone, the screen shows an option to swipe up to answer or swipe down to decline the call. The new UI replaces the swipe actions with dedicated buttons: a green button on the right side to answer calls and a red button on the left side to reject them.
The new design resembles how the iPhone handles incoming calls, where the accept and decline buttons are also positioned similarly. While many Android manufacturers, like Samsung, use dedicated buttons, they often place them in the opposite order compared to Apple. This shift by Google suggests an effort to create a more unified look across different phone brands.
It’s worth noting that the new UI is still in testing, so it may not appear in the final version of the app. The feature is likely being activated through server-side switches, which means not everyone will see it yet. Google hasn’t officially confirmed these changes, so feedback from users could influence whether the new design becomes permanent.
Samsung & Apple: Phone App UI
This move aligns with a broader trend in the smartphone market where companies are increasingly borrowing design elements from each other. While Android phones are widely popular, Google seems to be leaning towards a style that many users are familiar with, especially those who have used iPhones.
As the Pixel lineup continues to evolve, it raises questions about how much further Google will go in mimicking the iPhone’s design. The goal might be to streamline user experience, making it easier for users to switch between different devices, whether they’re using Android or iOS.
