Google shared some exciting updates for Google Wallet, especially for travelers and commuters. The big news is that Google Wallet will soon let you create a Digital ID using your U.S. passport. This Digital ID will be tested at some TSA checkpoints for domestic flights.
Besides TSA checkpoints, Google is working on making these digital IDs useful for other things, like renting cars, recovering accounts, and verifying identity.
To make a Digital ID pass, just go to the Google Wallet app, choose the option to create one with your U.S. passport, scan the passport’s security chip, and record a selfie video. It will take a few minutes to process your ID pass.
Google emphasizes that you should still carry your physical ID because the digital version isn’t a full replacement.

In other news, people in the U.S. can now add some prepaid commuter benefit cards, like those from Edenred and HealthEquity, to Google Wallet. Google is also working to expand mobile payments with more transit and payment companies around the world.
Another new feature is that Google Wallet will automatically import your transit tickets from your Gmail confirmations. Soon, you’ll be able to see live train updates right in the app.
Additionally, users in Iowa, New Mexico, and Ohio will soon be able to save their state-issued IDs and driver’s licenses in Google Wallet.
Lastly, you’ll get notifications in Google Wallet when there are updates to your passes or messages, like a change in your boarding pass seat or a new special at your favorite coffee shop.
