Today, October 2, 2024, there’s an exciting annular solar eclipse happening! While most of us won’t be in the path to see the full “ring of fire,” you can still catch the event live online.

What is an Annular Solar Eclipse?
During this type of eclipse, the Moon covers most of the Sun, but not completely. Because the Moon is farther away from Earth, it doesn’t block out the entire Sun, creating a beautiful ring of sunlight around it—this is what we call the “ring of fire.”
Visibility:
This eclipse will be best seen in parts of South America, especially on Easter Island, as well as in Chile and Argentina. If you’re in these areas, you can witness the full effect. For those of us elsewhere, including the UK, Europe, and North America, watching online is the way to go!
Important Details:
During the eclipse today, about 93% of the Sun will be covered by the Moon. The ring of fire effect can last for up to 7 minutes and 25 seconds in the best locations. If you’re watching in person, be sure to use solar eclipse glasses or a solar telescope to protect your eyes.
Special Effects:
You might also see interesting features like Baily’s beads, which are tiny bits of sunlight shining through the Moon’s valleys and mountains.
If you can’t go outside to watch, enjoy the livestream and experience the wonder of this annular solar eclipse from the comfort of your home!
