With the October 2024 Feature Drop, Google is updating the Pixel Camera to version 9.6 for all supported devices through the Play Store. While the Pixel 9 series is currently using version 9.5, older models will remain on version 9.4.
For users of the Pixel 9, 9 Pro, and 9 Pro XL, Camera 9.6 introduces a new feature for underwater photography and video. This update helps restore the “true colors” of your pictures when you’re underwater.
To use this feature, make sure your phone is in a waterproof case and go to Camera Settings > Advanced to find the new toggle at the bottom. When activated, you’ll see “Underwater photography/video on” at the top of your viewfinder. Older Pixel devices have a similar feature, but it requires a specific app and case brand.
Another exciting addition for the Pixel 9 devices is the “vertical Panorama” mode. Instead of being limited to horizontal shots, you can now capture panoramic photos vertically without any prompts to rotate your phone.
For users with Pixel 6 to 8a devices still on version 9.4, the update makes it easier to access Astrophotography. When in the Night Sight mode, just tap a button at the bottom right to reveal a new control option. And it’s also available on Instagram for all eligible devices.
You can slide or tap to select Astro, and it will show a timer for up to a certain number of minutes, giving you 5 seconds to set your phone down for the best night sky shots.
Additionally, Camera 9.6 includes new “Quick access controls” that let you adjust white balance, brightness, and shadows by tapping on the viewfinder. This feature is not yet active but promises to bring back the sliders from previous Camera UI versions.
